ActiveOps and GB7s support Heroes of Hope with TRY For Good at the Emirates Dubai 7s 2024

Dubai, 28 November 2024: ActiveOps, a leader in AI-powered Decision Intelligence software and the Official Analytics Partner of the Great Britain Men’s & Women’s Rugby Sevens (GB7s), has today announced an initiative to support Heroes of Hope UAE, a non-profit organisation that empowers individuals of determination through sports, fostering inclusion and personal growth across the community.

The initiative, entitled ‘TRY For Good’, will see ActiveOps make a donation of 500 United Arab Emirate Dirhams to Heroes of Hope UAE for every try scored by the GB7s men’s and women’s teams throughout the tournament in Dubai. As well as this, the men’s and women’s teams met with some of the heroes from Heroes of Hope ahead of the tournament, an engaging session where the heroes' and GB7s teams spoke about their journey, the sport of Rugby Sevens and now their connected ambitions.

Founded by Hollie Murphy, Heroes of Hope is dedicated to helping People of Determination (PODs) develop their sporting, social, and interpersonal skills. Based in Dubai, Hollie said: "Heroes of Hope has built an inclusive and diverse community for athletes with special needs. We work to create opportunities and pathways for all athletes to reach their potential and accomplish their own dreams. The TRY for Good initiative by ActiveOps with GB7s enables us to create a unique interactive experience for our heroes and further improve our delivery and mission of expanding opportunities.”

GB7s 2024-25 Squad Announcement

Great Britain Rugby Sevens have announced their squads for the upcoming HSBC World SVNS Series, which kicks off in Dubai on Saturday 30th November.

Following preparation at their training base at the Hazelwood Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames, the men’s and women’s squads are primed for action and raring to go.

Excitement is high in both camps, with the women’s team’s working well under new head coach Giselle Mather.

The former Wasps and Trailfinders director of rugby has appointed Olympian Emma Uren as her captain, with Isla Norman- Bell named vice-captain.

Meanwhile, Ethan Waddleton will lead Tony Roques’ men’s team, with Tom Emery as vice-captain and Kaleem Baretto named as club captain after suffering an injury that will see him miss the majority of the season.

The two Great Britain squads in full are as follows:

GB7s director of rugby, Ciaran Beattie, is understandably excited for the start of the new season, saying:

“Like all international squads competing in the HSBC World SVNS Series, we are looking forward to the start at the highly anticipated Emirates Dubai 7s.

Following the world-record crowds in the recent Paris Olympic Games, we are keen to add to the spectacle and highly competitive nature that is the World SVNS Series.

A new series and fine competition, with new faces as well as established stars, makes for intriguing and highly compelling watching.

We know from inside the GB7s camp that both the women’s and men’s squads are eager to get off to good starts in the Dubai and Cape Town tournaments.

These are exciting times for everyone involved in GB7s and my congratulations to go to everyone selected in the squads and those named as captains.”

The move to Hazelwood has come as part of a wider rebrand for GB7s, whose new kit and new logo will be unveiled ahead of the Dubai tournament at the end of the month.

The impact of a settled base could not be overstated by performance director Joe Lydon, who said: “Securing Hazelwood as our training ground for the season is a big step forward for the squads.

It will provide us with the security and stability of a home base, ensuring that we have the best possible preparation this season.

More widely it signals a new era for GB7s. With an experienced leadership team and a great line-up of talent, we are excited about what the future holds.”

The gains in preparation have only been possible thanks to the support of GB7s’ sponsors, Titan Wealth, ActiveOps, Coca Cola Zero and growth consultancy Champions UK plc.

Jo Plinston, head of partnerships and events at lead sponsor Titan Wealth, said:

“We see so much potential in the sport of sevens rugby and it is great that we can be on the journey alongside GB7s.

We’ll be out in Dubai showing our support in person, and we wish both teams the very best of luck this season.”

12 men’s and women’s teams from across the globe compete in the HSBC World SVNS Series commencing in Dubai on Saturday 30th November.

The GB7s squads will also head to Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Singapore and Los Angeles throughout the season as the sport builds on a record-breaking Olympic Games in Paris, which saw 530,000 fans attend matches and tens of millions more watch on TV.

GB7s Statement

Following the recent RFU disciplinary investigation, Great Britain Rugby Sevens conducted an all-inclusive internal review.

The player involved, who was present at the review, expressed great remorse. Whilst the incident is an isolated one, the Great Britain team, players and staff feel it's necessary to reassert their zero-tolerance approach to discrimination in all of its forms.

Great Britain Sevens are committed to working internally to develop our EDI policies and to make sure rugby is a safer, more enjoyable space for all.

Giselle Mather announced as new women's team head coach

Great Britain Rugby Sevens (GB7s) has announced the appointment of Giselle Mather as its new women’s team head coach for the upcoming season.

Mather is a distinguished figure in the world of rugby and brings her experience as a former player and a coach. She also received 34 caps for England, where she became a World Cup winner in 1994.
Mather has held numerous coaching roles in both the men’s and women’s games, including time with Wasps Women and London Irish men and was also the first woman to earn a Level 4 RFU coaching qualification.

Stepping into her new role, Mather said: "I am incredibly excited to take on this role with the Great Britain Rugby Sevens women’s team. Women’s rugby is on the rise globally, and to be a part of that trajectory and development at an international level is a fantastic opportunity.
“I look forward to working with the talented group of players that we have and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve as a team."

Ciaran Beattie, GB7s director of rugby added: "We are thrilled to welcome Giselle as the head coach of the women's team. Her vast experience, vision, and passion for the sport make her the perfect fit for our programme.

“We have no doubt that she will bring fresh energy and perspective to the team, helping to elevate our performance on the world stage."

Mather joins GB7s from her previous role as director of rugby at Ealing Trailfinders, where she played a key part in the club securing a place in premiership women’s rugby last season, where the team finished sixth in their first season in the top tier.

Robbie Fergusson and Jamie Farndale Retire from Rugby

Two of Scotland’s most experienced international sevens players, Robbie Fergusson and Jamie Farndale, are to retire from the sport after stellar careers.

The pair, who have between them scored nearly 1,300 points on various iterations of the World Rugby SVNS series, made their debuts in 2017 and 2015 respectively and have combined to make more than 560 matches on the circuit for Scotland or, latterly, Great Britain.

In a tale laced with symmetry, both Farndale and Fergusson are previous Scotland 7s captains; have appeared at two Commonwealth Games; and each would have featured at consecutive Rugby World Cup Sevens, were it not for Robbie missing the latter event for the birth of his second child in 2022.

After Great Britain narrowly missed out on the Olympic Games, losing out to South Africa in the final of last weekend’s repechage competition, the two former Scotland 7s captains have called time on proceedings.

Robbie Fergusson made his World Series debut in Dubai in 2017 and in his first season on the circuit, displayed the sort of consistency of performance that would become a fixture of his career, picking up the Impact Player award in the season’s final event in Paris after scoring points in each of Scotland’s five matches.

Fergusson represented Scotland at age-grade levels through to U20, featuring at two Junior World Championships in 2012 and 2013 (where Scotland finished ninth and tenth respectively).

But it was on the international sevens circuit that he would develop into one of the most rounded players on display. A playmaker who led from the front, he was named Scotland 7s co-captain, with Farndale, ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, before being given the sole honour by then-new head coach Ciaran Beattie the year after.

His eye for detail and ability to put others around him in space did not detract from his own try-scoring threat, with Fergusson notching 87 tries from 256 World SVNS Series matches, as well as 81 conversions for a career tally of 597 points.

Robbie at-a-glance

– Scotland U17/U18/U20 age grades

– Won the Scottish league and Cup double with Ayr RFC 2012/2013

– Glasgow Warriors (debut 2015)

– Commonwealth Games 2018, 2022

– Rugby World Cups Sevens 2018

– 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games

– European games silver medallist 2023

– 50 World Sevens Series caps with Scotland and Great Britain.

Looking back on his storied sevens career, Robbie said: “7s is an incredible environment to be part of and I consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to do it for this long.

“Off-field the memories and friendships I have made will last a lifetime. On-field, making the Olympic squad for 2020 is a career highlight with the work that went into getting selected for that and more recently, beating Australia in Singapore to keep Great Britain on the World SVNS Series circuit was very special.”

Fellow stalwart Jamie Farndale is the all-time leading Scottish try scorer in various guises of the international sevens series. The former Edinburgh Academy pupil joined Edinburgh Rugby on a development contract straight from school, going on to become the club’s youngest debutant and representing Scotland at three Junior World Championships.

A prolific scorer, Farndale accumulated no fewer than 136 tries on the World Sevens Series over the course of his 302 matches for Scotland and then Great Britain. His tally of games is the most by a Scot, testament to Farndale’s physical attributes as well as his prowess with ball in hand.

Away from rugby, Jamie’s other passion lies in sustainability and in particular what the world of sport looks like in the future as it tries to combat, amongst other issues, climate change. His studies on sustainability at Cambridge University also led to him, earlier this year, winning the Varsity Match.

Jamie at-a-glance

– 50 World Sevens Series caps with Scotland and Great Britain

– Scored the winning try to beat New Zealand for the first and still only time in Scottish rugby history at any level before going on to win Twickenham 7s in 2017

– Twickenham World Rugby Sevens Series winner in 2016 & 2017

– Commonwealth Games 2018, 2022

– Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018, 2022

– European Games Silver medallist 2023

– World Rugby 7s try of the season 2022

– Runner-up in Melrose 7s in 2014 with Edinburgh Accies; winner and player of the tournament in 2024 with Shoguns

– 24 caps at U20 level and top try scorer at the 2012 Junior World Championship; top try scorer of all time at Junior World Championships by the time of his last tournament in 2014 (10 tries)

On his sterling career, Jamie reflected: “I am so grateful for the experiences that rugby has given me and the people that I’ve met along the way.

“There are so many moments that I will live with me forever. In terms of a highlight, it is hard to look past becoming the first and only Scottish team to beat the All Blacks on the way to beating England in their own back yard to lift the trophy at Twickenham in 2017. That day was so incredibly special!”

Ciaran Beattie, under whom both Fergusson and Farndale led Scotland, paid tribute to the pair, saying: “I’ve worked with the pair of them since they were part of the Scotland U20 set-up and our paths have crossed throughout their rugby journey.

“It’s been a privilege to see Robbie and Jamie grow into the players and people that they have. They’re exceptional human beings, have always helped others coming through and they represented Scotland with distinction.”

Olympic Games Pool Draw

On Olympic Day, World Rugby and Paris 2024 have unveiled the pools for the Olympic rugby sevens competitions taking place in the French capital from 24-30 July.

The 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams were allocated to three pools of four teams based on their rankings due to performances over the last two years of the HSBC SVNS Series, Challenger Series and other World Rugby-sanctioned tournaments.

All six World Rugby regions are represented among the 24 teams who secured their spots in Paris via the HSBC SVNS Series and regional qualification competitions.

Women’s competition (28-30 July)

In the women’s competition, the battle will also be fierce with three very competitive pools. Reigning Olympic Champions and SVNS League Winners New Zealand will be strong contenders and face Fiji, Canada and freshly qualified China in Pool A.

Pool B will also provide fascinating competition with Rio 2016 Olympic and SVNS 2024 Grand Final champions Australia facing Ireland, Great Britain and debutants South Africa.

Hosts France have been placed in Pool C as one of three top ranked teams and will look to improve on their silver medal at Tokyo 2020 with pool matches against the USA, Japan and Brazil.

Emma Uren to Captain Team GB

Emma Uren will captain the women’s side for the Paris Olympic Games.

“It’s a great honour to be selected to go to my second Olympic Games but to be asked to lead out such a talented group that includes double and triple Olympians is something truly very special. It has been a year of challenges on which this group has delivered when it really mattered and I cannot wait to take that spirit and energy onto the pitch at Paris 2024”
